I wish you a merry Christmas

Christmas. I’ve been getting a barrage of e-cards, SMS and cards wishing me a merry Christmas.

Truthfully, for me, Christmas is just like Valentine’s Day. Too commercialised and it’s meaning has been lost in our so-called ‘modern’ lives.

That doesn’t mean I don’t have or don’t believe in the spirit of Christmas.

I just feel that most of us only celebrate it once a year when it should be celebrated everyday.

What is Christmas? For the Roman Catholics, and Christians of all denominations, this is the day that God’s only son entered our planet as a homo sapien (Human being for the uninitiated). He was sent to spread the message of love and kindness, that you reap what you sow, of forgiveness and forgiving, of the promise of heaven and everlasting life. He was a message of hope.

But the message has become so skewed! People think of heaven being ‘somewhere up there’, and hell being ‘somewhere down there’, that everlasting life is achieved after we pass out of this life and world (or what the majority know as death).

Somehow, somewhere along the passage of evolution, we forgot how to love, how to forgive, how to ‘do unto others only what you want done unto you’. We’ve become so selfish, so egocentric, so self-possessed.

If we were just a little more focused, we’d realise that the message of love can be celebrated everyday and not just on one or two designated holidays. Presents (slight digression: have you ever wondered why the phrase is ‘gift from God’ and not ‘present from God’?) can be given everyday too!

And it’s Christmas, not X’mas. Even my word spell-check insists so. ;p

Ah well, let’s not be Mr Scrooge and spoil the merry mood.

Have a blessed Christmas, everyone. May the spirit of the season fill you, and be with you every day of your life.
